Israel Shows No Mercy, Bombs the Hell Out of Syria After Massive Chemical Attack

An airstrike was carried out in Syria at a military base. Most outlets were quick to place the blame on Israel.

From Washington Post:

ISTANBUL — A missile strike on an air base in central Syria was carried out by Israeli warplanes in the early hours of Monday morning causing multiple casualties, according to the Syrian and Russian governments, amid fears of a wider confrontation between world powers.

Israeli officials did not immediately comment on the reports. The raid on the T4 airfield in Homs province — believed also to be a base for Iranian and Iranian-allied militia — comes as tensions rise over possible U.S. military action in Syria in response to the alleged chemical strike near Damascus late Saturday.

Syria’s ally, Russia, on Monday called the Israeli raid a “dangerous development,” and said reports of a gas attack near Damascus were also a “provocation,” Reuters reported.

U.S. officials had said Sunday that they were weighing options to strike Syrian government targets after at least 40 people were killed in the opposition-held town of Douma, roughly 10 miles from the Syrian capital. President Trump had also said Sunday that there would be a “big price to pay” for the attack.

The U.S. has now confirmed that Israel hit Syria.

Israel carried out air strikes against a Syrian air base early Monday morning and informed the U.S. in advance, two U.S. officials told NBC News.

The pre-dawn missile attack came hours after a deadly suspected poison gas attack on the last remaining foothold for rebels fighting the Assad regime.

The Pentagon say America was not behind the attack.

The Pentagon has denied Syrian claims the US attacked a Homs air base Sunday, hours after President Donald Trump tweeted “Animal Assad” would have a “big price to pay” for an alleged chemical weapons attack in the city of Douma.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency claimed Syrian air defenses shot down eight missiles fired at the T-4 airbase early Monday morning local time, in an attack which killed and injured an unspecified number of people.

The base, located in a strategic position between the cities of Homs and Palmyra in Syria’s west, has been a key staging ground for Syrian and Russian aircraft during the war.

Earlier, Syrian State TV said the assault was a “likely attack by the US.”

All of this comes on the heels of reports confirming a chemical gas attack took place in Syria.

The UK is working with its allies to come up with a rapid and unified response to the apparent chemical weapons attack on Saturday in the rebel-held Syrian town of Douma, Theresa May’s spokesman has said.

Calling the incident, which killed 42 people, deeply disturbing, Downing Street said Britain would consider a range of options if there was verified evidence of chemical weapons being used, but refused to speculate on what this might be.

As the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed it had begun an investigation into the attack, the spokesman also warned Russia – which backs the Syrian government – against seeking to obstruct OPCW’s work.

On Sunday, Donald Trump tweeted that the Syrian regime and its backers would pay a “big price” for the attack. Later that day Israeli warplanes bombed a Syrian regime airbase east of the city of Homs, Russian and Syrian military forces said.

Asked about the attack in Douma, No 10 said: “The reports of a chemical weapons attack are deeply disturbing. It’s vital that they must be urgently investigated and the international community must respond.

“We are swiftly working with our allies to agree a common position, As you know, we are one of the countries that has called for an emergency security council meeting, that will take place later today.”

Defense Secretary James Mattis won’t rule out military action against Syria.

Maybe if Barack Obama had followed through on his “red line” with Syria then President Trump wouldn’t have to deal with this issue.

Stayed tuned for more on the situation in Syria. Things are going down!
